Aske Thiberg: Dance performance Whereabouts

aske web

Aske Thiberg presents a 20–30-minute dance performance set to minimalist, repetitive digital melodies interspersed with recordings from online public sound libraries. The work draws heavily on Locking – a dance style that emerged in the 1970s alongside funk music. In this performance, the dancer’s indifferent facial expression, paired with repetitive movements and sounds, begins to blur the boundary between human and machine. The looping sonic signals that trigger each gesture raise the question of whether the artist is reacting to the music or if the music itself is controlling the body, turning it into an automated avatar.

Aske Thiberg (b. 1994) is a Copenhagen-based Swedish visual artist who received an MFA from the Royal Danish Academy of Arts in 2023. Thiberg has exhibited and performed at art institutions such as the Dusseldorf Kunstverein, Den Frie Contemporary Art Centre in Copenhagen, O-Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art in Copenhagen, Kunsthal Charlottenborg and Malmö Art Museum.
